Grassroots Women's Academy: "Claiming Our Cities, Claiming Our Roles"
On March 15th, 2010, 77 women from 20 countries, organized in community-based grassroots groups, NGOs and women's alliances came together as part of the four-day Grassroots Women's Academy "Claiming Our Cities, Claiming Our Roles" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Huairou Commission, in partnership with a coalition of Brazilian women's organizations that include REDEH, Camtra, Bordadeiras da Coroa, Arteiras, Asplande, Corte e Arte, AMB, COMZO, Ibase, the women's group from MNLM, and Espaco Feminista have organized this Academy as a space for grassroots women to exchange their strategies around governance, secure tenure and disaster resilience. The Academy also serves as a pre-conference platform to prepare and formulate collective advocacy messages to influence policies and resources to reflect the needs of poor women at the Fifth World Urban Forum, from March 22nd-26th 2010.
